What Is Medication Management?

Medication management is the ongoing oversight of psychiatric medication by a prescriber: choosing the right drug and dose, monitoring symptoms and side effects, checking interactions with your other prescriptions and adjusting over time. At BrainHealth Solutions it is done by psychiatrists, led by Dr. Robert Bota, whose clinical focus includes the interrelation between psychiatric illness and medical conditions, so patients with complex medical histories are not an exception here, they are the norm.

How Our Approach Differs

Your first visit is a full evaluation, not a 15-minute refill appointment. History, prior medication trials, medical conditions, sleep, substance use and goals are all covered before anything is prescribed.

Medication selection accounts for metabolism, dosage timing, interactions and side-effect burden. Dr. Bota's patients describe him as "not just a medicating doctor"; one credits him with resolving a periodic limb movement disorder that others had missed.

Medication is one tool in the practice, not the only one. If two or more trials have failed, the same team can move you to TMS, SAINT® or Spravato® without a referral elsewhere.

Who Provides Your Care

Medication management at BrainHealth Solutions is provided by board-certified psychiatrists: Dr. Robert Bota, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UC Riverside and author of more than 60 peer-reviewed publications; Dr. Tina Allee, experienced in comprehensive psychiatric care and medication management; and Dr. Mahtab K. Yousefi, who treats children and teens and offers care in English and Farsi. Your evaluation takes place at our Westwood office at 1762 Westwood Blvd, Suite 320, Los Angeles, CA 90024. Your clinician confirms where treatment sessions are scheduled; our Costa Mesa clinic (3151 Airway Ave, Bldg R, Costa Mesa, CA 92626) is the practice’s main treatment center.

Your Medication Management Visit

You share your name, contact information and a callback time. The team explains how the practice works and books your evaluation; same-day appointments may be available.

A thorough assessment of your medical history, current symptoms and existing medications, used to build a personalized treatment plan rather than a prescription on autopilot.

Your psychiatrist selects medication targeting your specific symptoms while weighing overall health and interactions, with attention to metabolism, dosage timing and side effects.

Regular follow-ups track symptom improvement and side effects. Reporting changes promptly lets the dose or agent be fine-tuned instead of waiting months for the next review.

If medication alone is not working, your psychiatrist can add psychotherapy, TMS, SAINT® or Spravato® from within the same practice.

Initial evaluations are longer than follow-ups and are conversational. You are asked about what has and has not worked, how side effects affected you and what you want to be different in daily life.

Follow-up visits are typically scheduled every few weeks during a medication change and spaced out once you are stable. Lab work is ordered when a medication requires it, such as lithium or certain mood stabilizers.

Patients with complex medical conditions should bring their full medication list. Checking interactions between psychiatric and medical prescriptions is a core part of every visit at BrainHealth Solutions.

Side Effects and How We Handle Them

Every psychiatric medication carries side effects, and unmanaged side effects are the most common reason people stop treatment. Managing them is the job, not an afterthought.

Commonly reported with antidepressants and related medications

Many of these fade within weeks or respond to a dose or timing change; others call for a different agent.

Monitored closely

If side effects persist, your psychiatrist weighs a switch against non-medication options such as TMS, which has no systemic drug effects.

What Good Medication Management Delivers

Carefully managed medication can significantly reduce the severity and frequency of symptoms, improving stability and the ability to work, sleep and engage with people. Progress is measured by daily function, not only by a rating scale.

About a third of people with depression do not respond adequately to two medication trials. At BrainHealth Solutions that is a signal to consider TMS, SAINT® or Spravato®, not to try a fifth antidepressant by default.

Benefits of Medication Management at BrainHealth Solutions

Patients describe a practice where the psychiatrist listens. One long-term patient wrote that the team is “attentive in our meetings and offer great insight on my personal goals”; another said treatment for ADHD changed life “significantly” within a year.

Carefully adjusted medication reduces the severity and frequency of symptoms, with gains measured in mood, sleep, focus and function.

Attention to metabolism, dose timing and interactions means problems are caught and addressed early instead of tolerated.

Dr. Bota’s expertise in the overlap of psychiatric and medical illness makes interaction analysis a standard part of every plan.

Dr. Mahtab K. Yousefi provides child and adolescent psychiatric care, combining psychodynamic training with evidence-based treatment, in English and Farsi.

If medication fails, TMS, SAINT® and Spravato® are available in the same practice, with the same records and clinicians.

Many plans are accepted, including Medicare and Anthem, and the team helps verify coverage before your first visit.

For Treatment-Resistant Conditions

If you have been through several medications for depression, anxiety or OCD and still are not well, medication management at BrainHealth Solutions includes an honest assessment of whether another trial is likely to help. When it is not, Dr. Bota’s team offers FDA-cleared alternatives, TMS and SAINT®, and FDA-approved Spravato®, so the decision is made with every option on the table.
