What Is Child &
Adolescent Psychiatry?

Child and adolescent psychiatry focuses on the emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs of children and teens as they grow. Care looks at the whole picture—including development, family life, school, relationships, and overall well-being—to better understand what your child is experiencing.
Conditions We Treat
Children and teens may experience mental health concerns in different ways. Our team provides evaluation and treatment for:
- School-Related Concerns
- Eating Disorders
How We Support Your Child
Treatment is never one-size-fits-all. Depending on your child’s needs, care may include:
Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation
We take time to understand your child’s symptoms, development, history, strengths, and environment. When helpful, we may also consider information from parents, teachers, schools, or other providers.
Medication Management
When medication is appropriate, we take a careful and conservative approach with close follow-up. Treatment is adjusted over time based on your child’s response and changing needs.
Psychotherapy
Age-appropriate therapy can give children and teens a supportive space to better understand their emotions, behaviors, and relationships. Psychodynamic approaches may be incorporated when appropriate.
Parent & Family Guidance
Supporting a child often means supporting the family, too. We provide practical guidance to help parents navigate challenges at home, at school, and throughout different stages of development.
Video Visits
Secure telepsychiatry makes it possible for families across California to access care when an in-person visit isn’t convenient.

When Should You Reach Out?

You don’t have to wait for things to become overwhelming. Consider reaching out if you notice significant changes in your child’s mood, sleep, appetite, school performance, friendships, behavior, or ability to manage everyday situations.
Frequent worry, meltdowns, withdrawal, difficulty concentrating, or concerns raised by a teacher or pediatrician can also be reasons to seek an evaluation.
What to Expect
The first appointment is an opportunity to listen, ask questions, and understand what your child and family are experiencing. Parents or guardians attend the initial visit and should bring your child’s insurance card, current medication list, and any relevant school reports or previous evaluations.
Who Can Benefit From Child &
Adolescent Psychiatry?
Psychiatric care may be helpful when emotional, behavioral, or developmental concerns begin interfering with a child’s daily life, relationships, school, or family. An evaluation can also provide clarity when you’re unsure whether what you’re seeing is part of normal development or something that deserves additional support.
Academic Partnership
Our child and adolescent program is a residency teaching clinic. Senior psychiatry residents from Community Medical Center Long Beach see patients alongside Dr. Yousefi, who serves as the supervising attending physician and oversees each child’s care.
This team-based model allows families to benefit from multiple perspectives while helping expand access to appointments.
